Baptisms/Christenings

Baptisms usually take place during one of our scheduled services. This is an occasion when new members are welcomed into the family of the Church, so it is appropriate that church members are present to celebrate with you.

Baptism in the Anglican Church makes use of three symbols: the Cross, water and light. The Cross of Christ is made as a sign on the person’s forehead. Water symbolises rebirth into new life as a Christian. The giving of a lighted candle symbolises the light of Christ.

Funerals and memorial services

St James is available for funerals. These are usually organised by the funeral directors. Memorial services can also be held at St James.

St James Cemetery

There are only a few plots left in the cemetery and these are reserved for people who have been active members of St James for at least 5 years.

If you are interested in the history of our church or in some information on those buried in the St James Cemetery then select the following link and do the Cemetery Tour with the details provided by this guide.

Sue Reid Memorial Wall

The Sue Reid Memorial Wall is a place for recording those parishioners who have died by having plaques in their memory.

In 2012 the St James church council, keenly aware that there was very limited burial space remaining in the cemetery, commissioned a local architect and builder to erect a memorial wall. This coincided with a general church meeting at which it was decided that a memorial wall would be a suitable way of remembering Reverend Sue Reid who had been a valued member of the shared ministry team and who had been part of St James for 30 years.

Please contact the Sexton (via the Church office) for all cemetery and memorial wall enquires.
